Everyone is an investment manager

September 5, 2009

23-06-2008:

Everyone who invests is also an investment manager himself. Although professional investment managers are employed to handle investment decisions for most of the investment products, in many areas an investor himself has to make the crucial decisions. Some of these decisions include when to invest, which one is better, how much to invest, when to take profit (how about losses), when to switch, when to add, etc. An investor himself will have to make many decisions even though financial consultants, investment advisers, financial planners and fund managers may provide advice from time to time. The final decision of an investor will very much be influenced by his risk appetite, expectation, cash flow needs, investment history, investment experience, etc Simplest investment needs decision Even the simplest investment, ie putting your excess money in fixed deposits (FD), requires a decision.

The questions that come to mind immediately are which banks provide higher interest rates, how long to place (one month, three months, 12 months etc), how to allocate between FD which provides a higher interest rate and the smaller interest-bearing savings account. Fortunately, most banks provide competitive rates and there is less need for extensive comparison. Furthermore, the interest differential between different maturity durations is small and as such, most people opt for shorter tenure of one-month maturity for FD. In view of the current low interest rates offered by banks, it may not be necessary to crack the brain to pick and choose, unless the amount is substantial. Complexity arises when some banks develop innovative products to lure customers, especially the high net worth individuals. Some of these are high interest rate foreign currency deposits, interest upfront deposits, etc.

    New cabinet minister

    April 9, 2009

Let see the effect of new cabinet minister line up by newly appointed prime minister.

Index KLSE – The KLCI ended 10 points higher at 917.9

The local stock market rebounded on April 9, after two days of losses, following overnight gains on Wall Street and ahead of the Prime Minister’s announcement on the new Cabinet line-up, which was announced in the afternoon.

Sentiment across Asia was also boosted by positive economic news from Japan. Japan’s stock market rallied from an unexpectedly positive reading on core machinery orders, which rose 1.4% month-on-month in February 2009 after four months of contractions – and well above expectations of a 7.9% drop. The data is a gauge of capital expenditure and could suggest business spending is nearing bottom.

Investor sentiment has improved over the last month as economic data – initially from the US but also now increasingly from elsewhere – start to show signs of a bottoming for the US and global economy. This has made investors more confident of investing in equities again, as economists are finally seeing some light at the end of the long dark tunnel.

The sustainability of global markets’ recent gains – and scope for more – will depend on upcoming US economic data. They will either help confirm or dispel investors’ recent optimism about the economy, noting that Wall Street has built in very strong expectations of a recovery later this year.

The KLCI was in positive territory the whole day. The KLCI ended 10 points higher at 917.9. Market breadth was positive with advancing stocks beating declining ones by a 2.7-to-one margin. Trading volume was high with 715 million shares changing hands.

Actively traded stocks include Maybank-OR, Johan, KNM, MRCB, Berjaya Corp, Resorts, TM and Mulpha. Major gainers include Tanjong plc, LPI, KL Kepong, MAS and Kossan. Losers include Wijaya, DKSH and UPA. Meanwhile, crude palm oil prices surged over 4% to above RM2,250 per tonne in the afternoon session.

Investment bank forecast a 2009 year-end close of 1,020 for the index

    January 15, 2009

Another tips to face the worst economic and financial crisis in decades

    October 10, 2008

    ‘Start saving’

Financial experts offer these steps to help consumers climb out of personal debt and turn their financial picture around – even before the economy does. Here’s how:

    1. Look at the big picture. Experts agree that before fixing your finances, you must first take stock of your complete financial picture. Compile all of your bills and outstanding debts, including credit cards, mortgages, student loans, auto loans, personal loans and bank loans, and pinpoint exactly what you owe on each account and in total. List the creditor, monthly payment, outstanding balance, interest rate, due date and credit limit for each.

My advice is to enter the market at lowest price…

    September 8, 2008

Here is the definition of Dollar Cost Averaging

“Instead of investing assets in a lump sum, the investor works his way into a position by slowly buying smaller amounts over a longer period of time. This spreads the cost basis out over several years, providing insulation against changes in market price.”

But it has been criticized by some gurus as more of a marketing gimmick than a strategy….

What ever it is, I would suggest to investors that the current trend of unit price getting lower and lower, take this opportunities to average your unit price. How its work ?

You have bought a fund at peak price on Dec 07, you invested your RM10,000, you would have purchased 10 000 shares at RM1 each. When the current stock price at the lowest price say RM0.50, you added more 10000 unit by bought RM 5000. Then now, your cost per unit would reduce from RM1 each to RM0.75. Later, when the market start bouncing, you can maximize the profit.

    unit you hold = 20 000, capital cost = RM 15 000, cost per unit = (1/20000)xRM15000) = RM0.75

    Surviving the 2008 recession

    today 19.8.08 at 10.00 am

    12. Look at your stock portfolio and make smart moves. I know lots of you don’t look too closely at what you’re invested in. Lots of people really got hurt last time there was a downturn in the stock market. Are you diversified? Do you have more than a small percent of your portfolio in any one company? Have you sat down with a financial planner lately and talked through your portfolio?

    A series of economic recession

    August 18, 2008

    British Economy Down

In stark confirmation that Britain is in the grip of recession, Government statistics showed on Wednesday that the economy fell by 1.2 percent in the third quarter. It was the biggest fall since 1980. The decline in gross domestic product, which measures the total value of goods and services produced in the period, compared with a rise of four-tenths of a percent in the second quarter. The most widely accepted definition of recession is two consecutive quarters of economic decline. Economists widely predict that the fourth quarter will also show a contraction.

18-08-2008: KLCI down 7.64 points at midday

PETALING JAYA: Local stocks ended midday lower as concerns about higher inflation taking a toll on the economy as well as sliding crude palm oil (CPO) futures won over any upbeat sentiments on the slide in crude oil prices in recent weeks.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index ended midday at 1,087.41 points, down 7.64 points, or 0.7%, dragged lower by declines at Sime Darby Bhd, KNM Group Bhd and Gamuda Bhd.

Sime Darby fell 20 sen to RM6.45, KNM slid 18 sen, or 10.98%, to RM1.46 while Gamuda dipped 19 sen to RM2.83. The trio collectively accounted for 4.19 points, or 55%, of the KLCI’s decline at midday. KNM is down for a third straight day today as investors trimmed positions on speculations that the company may incur higher costs for its takeover of German components maker Borsig GmbH, Bloomberg newswire reported this morning.

Japan’s economy contracts in April-June quarter

Japan appears to be sinking into recession, government data showed Wednesday, the latest sign that the global economic slowdown is worsening among the world’s biggest economies.

“The numbers were awful,” Hideo Kumano, chief economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute in Tokyo, said after the Japanese government reported that the nation’s gross domestic product shrank at an annual 2.4 percent rate in the three months through June 30. “Things are going to be very tough in the second half of the year.”

Even as commodity prices are beginning to ease, the twin credit and housing crises in the United States, coupled with the highest inflation in a generation, are weighing on consumers around the world.

    Hands-on CEO

    July 22, 2008

‘Pastinya ia memanfaatkan AirAsia, tetapi kami belum benar-benar menggunakannya.

Sedang sebahagian syarikat penerbangan mengurangkan khidmat penerbangan, AirAsia terus menambah jumlah penerbangannya.
